TVÅ WORKSHOPS med Tina Quartey
LAYERS OF TIME

MAKING AN ABSTRACT GROOVE CONCRETE

TWO WORKSHOPS with Tina Quartey:
LAYERS OF TIME
What happens when we are playing the same rhythm together for a long time and fully unite in the common pulse? Or when we play different rhythms that complement each other, creating a new wholeness with surprising dimensions. In this workshop we are exploring the polyrhythmical layers of the rich Afro Cuban percussion music, also in relation to the concept of clave.
MAKING AN ABSTRACT GROOVE CONCRETE
The Scandinavian dance polska has a ‘hard to capture’ rhythm that has intrigued and puzzled many musicians. With a standing point in the drumming traditions of Cuba, Haiti and West Africa we dive into it with the concept of clave as our navigator. As we explore its rhythmical structures through a delightful collective drum session, we might become surprised by how similar the basic features are in such culturally and geographically diverse music traditions.
In both these workshops each student require a conga drum, that we use as a musical tool. The focus is not primarily to learn conga drumming but to expand our rhythmical consciousness.
No previous experience of drumming is required.

I have given these workshops at music academies, folkhögskola, as summer courses on festivals, and as further training for music teachers and instrumental pedagogues, both in Sweden and abroad. I am happy to customize my teachings according to your specific requests.

Do we dare to meet, embrace and express feminine power and sexuality? Or are we continuing to oppress, customize and package it nicely...
The Sumerian story of Inanna's descent has inspired this composed improvisation. A percussion performance based on Afro Cuban ritual drumming, Brazilian capoeira music and Scandinavian folk music. Music that has evolved through the centuries, in direct contact with the spiritual dimension.
Tina Quartey, solo percussion: berimbau from Brazil, conga drums from Cuba/New York, Shekeré from Cuba, singing bowls and bells from Tibet and India.

I Took A Quantum Leap of Faith and Fell - en musikalisk poesiläsning
I oktober 2018 gavs sonettsamlingen I Took a Quantum Leap of Faith and Fell ut av ett förlag i Massachusetts, USA - the Golden Dragonfly Press.

I Took A Quantum Leap of Faith and Fell - a musical poetry reading
I Took a Quantum Leap of Faith was released in October 2018, published by
Golden Dragonfly Press in Massachusetts, USA. For the release Tina created
a performance with poetry reading and music, where the rhythmical sonnets
interact with the rhythmical music that has always been part of Tina Quartey’s
artistry.
The poems take us on an inner journey. Through ecstasy and soul
recognition, down into the darkness of the underworld, and up again. From
grieving and devastation to power and transformation.
